Combining XML and databases

I'm looking to combine everything I know, think, etc into a central location that can be queried and has the advantage of being all in one place

 

my instinct is to start with one file, "My File.htm", and get bigger by starting new files when an old one gets big... I know what I want, but I've had little experience with this

 

I know that xml is set up to encapsulate data in relevant tags with useful metadata... I'm not sure that it's what I need in this case...

 

so I'm reading about it.

 

I wouldn't be beyond using a native windows deal after I've learned something (more) about it... I've also fooled with MySQL though I'm not sure it's what I need here as it was for my PHPNuke (and other) site - not sure it would be useful for local storage
